Descrizione

Specie: i pesci Helicolenus hanno una grande testa che porta creste spinose e ha una grande bocca. Ci sono 5 spine sul margine posteriore e inferiore del preopercolo e due spine evidenti vicino alla parte posteriore dell'opercolo . Le loro pinne dorsali hanno 11-13 spine robuste e da 10 a 14 raggi molli. Le specie di questo genere variano in lunghezza da una lunghezza standard di 27 cm in H. fedorovi e H. hilgendorfii fino a una lunghezza totale di 50 cm in H. dactylopterus. Gli Helicolenus sono ovovivipari e la fecondazione è interna. Sono predatori di cefalopodi, echinodermi, crostacei e pesci. Si sa che vivono fino a 42 anni. Gli Helicolenus sono commercialmente importanti nella pesca in alcune regioni come l'Australia meridionale.

Diffusione

Si trova nell'Atlantico sudorientale: isola di Gough e Tristan da Cunha. Oceano Indiano occidentale: isole di St. Paul e Amsterdam. Può verificarsi a Walter's Shoals. Marino batidemersale; distribuzione batimetrica 400 - 978 m.
